It’s been years since Netflix’s Cheer star Gabi Butler was announced as the latest celebrity signing for WWE, but it looks like that deal may have quietly fizzled out. Despite the major headlines when the signing was made public, there’s been zero confirmation that Butler ever stepped foot inside the WWE Performance Center.
During the Fightful Select Backstage Report podcast, Sean Ross Sapp addressed the speculation after a fan asked if Butler was still on track to train and eventually debut in WWE. Sapp made it clear—while the signing was legitimate, there’s been no actual sign of progress.
“So I put in an inquiry with WWE about that, but I have never heard about her being at the Performance Center — like, ever. Like, at no point since then has anybody told me, ‘Yeah, yeah, she’s here and she’s doing stuff.’”
Sapp added that Butler’s appearance on another TV show may have also been a clue that her focus wasn’t on wrestling after all.
“Also, she did a TV show earlier this year that likely would have filmed last year — Battle Camp, I think it was called. But no, I had never heard — and I know that People Magazine announced the signing, so that came straight from WWE.”
It was also pointed out that when major outlets like People Magazine report WWE news, it’s straight from the company’s PR machine—not independent journalism.
“That’s the way those work. If you see Variety or People or anything like that reporting, quite frankly, any wrestling news, it’s coming straight from WWE and their PR company or somebody officially associated with it. They are not going down and hunting out the newest WWE signings.”
Since that initial PR announcement, WWE has been radio silent on Butler’s status, and there’s been no credible indication she’s been training or preparing for a WWE debut.
So, has Butler already quietly parted ways with WWE, or is she simply putting wrestling on hold while she pursues other projects? That remains a mystery.
