MJF came back to CMLL with a goal in mind: to win the CMLL World Light Heavyweight title. That’s exactly what happened as the Salt of the Earth beat Averno to become the new champion.

On the August 1, 2025 episode of CMLL Viernes Espectacular at Arena Mexico, MJF took on Averno in the main event. The match was for the CMLL World Light Heavyweight Championship, with Averno defending the title against the Salt of the Earth.

It was a hard-hitting match from start to finish but in the end, MJF hurt Averno’s knee and made him tap out with a half-crab submission. With that, MJF became the new CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion.

This marks MJF’s first championship in CMLL, his first Light Heavyweight Title and his 14th singles title in his wrestling career. Averno had held the title for 491 days and defended it five times before losing it to MJF.

We will have to wait and see how MJF will continue to be booked as the champion moving forward, since he’ll likely keep the title for a while and feud with CMLL’s top stars in the coming weeks.
