Tonight’s show featured an AEW World Championship four-way match, with Samoa Joe of The Opps defending the title against Swerve Strickland, “Hangman” Adam Page, and MJF.
This was the final match in a night that included a lot of action and story making events. In the end, it was left to the AEW World Title to cap off the big night in Illinois.
Samoa Joe walked into the match as a double champion, with a trios belt over his shoulder as well. He also had a huge portion of the crowd behind him. Justin Roberts gave everyone in this match great ring introductions to give it a big fight feel.
Everyone had a chance to throw caution to the wind with a high-risk move. This got fans to a fever pitch early on into the match.
When the time finally came for Swerve and Hangman to stand-off, fans went crazy. After all, those two had a brutal feud that stretched a long time.
This match was a war of trading shots, reversals, and near falls. Everyone wanted to get their stuff in, and there was no shortage of hard-hitting signature moves. Samoa Joe had a Coquina Clutch on MJF, but then Swerve took Joe out from behind.
The contest neared its finish as MJF took control with a thumb to the eye, but Hangman Page stopped him with a big boot. Fans chanted on as the match continued with MJF nailing a destroyer on Swerve for a near fall.
Hangman Page hit a Deadeye for another near fall on MJF. Then he was taken out of the ring after trying a Buckshot Lariat. Swerve took Samoa Joe down, but he wasn’t able to capitalize. Instead, the Opps jumped in to beat the challengers down, but Samoa Joe couldn’t quite score a pinfall.
Eventually, Samoa Joe latched another Coquina Clutch on Hangman Page. Then Swerve Stickland climbed on the top to hit a Swerve Stomp on the champion. Swerve got on the top rope again, but Joe caught him before Strickland turned it into a powerbomb, but MJF sent Swerve flying to the floor. Then Hangman Page nailed two Buckshot Lariats on Samoa Joe, but he didn’t go down. Suddenly, MJF jumped in and nailed his finisher on Joe for teh win to become the AEW World Champion once again.
