Maxwell Jacob Friedman didn’t just choose wrestling — he risked a guaranteed future to make it happen.
While appearing on The Adam Friedland Show, MJF opened up about one of the biggest turning points in his life, revealing that he walked away from a full football scholarship because he knew his real passion was inside a wrestling ring. The decision wasn’t easy, especially considering the opportunity he had in front of him.
MJF explained that he was attending college on a full football scholarship as a middle linebacker and was even told he would start as a freshman. Despite that major opportunity, he admitted he felt completely disconnected from football and couldn’t ignore his dream of becoming a professional wrestler.
“I was 18 years old… the story is kind of wild. Basically I had a full ride football scholarship as a middle linebacker… and I was there. I had a full ride and the head coach told me he wanted to start me as a freshman and I felt nothing, bro. I felt absolute—I couldn't have given less of a [expletive] because I just wanted to be Roddy Piper. I just wanted to be a wrestler, you know?”
That moment set off a chain reaction that quickly escalated. After confiding in a roommate that he wanted to leave, word got back to his coach, forcing MJF into an uncomfortable conversation where he struggled to explain his true motivation. Rather than admitting he wanted to become a professional wrestler — something he feared would sound ridiculous — he kept his reasoning vague while trying to find a way out.
“I remember telling my roommate… ‘Hey, I don't know if I really want to be here anymore.’ And he just went, ‘Oh,’ and left the room… The next day I got called into the coach's office… the coach was like, ‘I heard you want to leave.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah… I kind of want to go home.’”
MJF admitted he avoided telling his coach the real reason behind his decision because he believed it would be laughed off as unrealistic.
“I didn't tell him why… because how ludicrous and stupid would I look if I looked at him and I said, ‘I want to be a professional wrestler’? Like he'd laugh in my face at that point.”
Eventually, MJF made the decision that changed everything. Instead of staying and following the safer path, he packed what he needed in the middle of the night and left campus without looking back.
“So I waited till like 3:00 or 4:00 a.m., packed the essentials—not even everything—and I hopped in my Dodge Ram pickup truck and I drove all the way home… And I found a wrestling school… Creative Pro Wrestling Academy in Hicksville, Long Island… and I started training there.”
That bold move ultimately launched the career that would turn MJF into one of the most talked-about stars in professional wrestling today. Walking away from a full scholarship isn’t something most people would consider, but for MJF, it became the foundation of everything that followed. Choosing passion over security is a risk few people are willing to take, but in MJF’s case, it paid off in a massive way as he carved out his own path in the wrestling world.
