Celebrity involvement in professional wrestling is nothing new, as many stars have stepped into the business for various reasons. This includes Travis Scott’s appearance at WWE Elimination Chamber last week and now, MJF has defended Scott’s involvement in the event.
While speaking to Sports Illustrated, MJF compared Travis Scott’s involvement in John Cena’s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber to Dennis Rodman’s presence with the nWo in WCW.
MJF pointed out that when Rodman appeared in wrestling, major sports networks like ESPN and other serious news outlets covered it, even though they typically ignore professional wrestling.
The Salt of the Earth explained that while longtime wrestling fans might not understand or care about Scott’s presence, fans of Travis Scott who work at major media outlets could see it as a big deal, leading to more mainstream attention for the event.
“Should Travis Scott have been there at all? Some people might have said the same thing about Dennis Rodman when he was standing with the NWO back in the day. But because Rodman was there, ESPN picked it up, serious news affiliates covered it—outlets that normally wouldn’t give professional wrestling the time of day because they are f***** morons. Everything is pro wrestling, right?
So, Travis Scott being there—yeah, fans like me, you, or longtime wrestling watchers might be thinking, ‘What the hell is this guy doing here?’ We don’t have an emotional connection to him. But a Travis Scott fan who works at ESPN, FOX, MSNBC, or CNN might see it differently. They might go, ‘Oh, s***, Travis Scott was involved in this? We should talk about it.’”
For the record, WWE has discussed the possibility of booking Travis Scott for future matches, as he has been training for the same. However, he ended up legitimately injuring Cody Rhodes at Elimination Chamber, which fans felt was simply necessary on Scott’s part. Regardless, Scott will be featured more often on WWE television as we head towards WrestleMania 41, and MJF certainly thinks that’s just good for business.
