Mick Foley’s hardcore legacy is filled with brutal moments, but when it comes to his flaming table bump at WrestleMania 22, the WWE Hall of Famer says the pain didn’t even register—and it had everything to do with emotion, not adrenaline.
During a sit-down with Chris Van Vliet, Foley was asked how it was possible that being speared through a flaming table by Edge didn’t hurt. His answer wasn’t what you’d expect from a guy whose body has been through hell.
“Well, also the same way getting thrown off the stage into the open grave by Big Show didn’t hurt. It didn’t hurt because I was so happy that it had gone well. And especially in Mania with Edge—when we went through [the table] and then, in particular, Edge did that slow cover where he was like shaking… I’d never seen a cover like that before.”
Foley revealed that the emotional payoff of finally getting his WrestleMania moment outweighed the physical toll. And what came next during the match made the moment even more special.
“He was like sitting and he’s shaking. And then he gives you that ‘I love you.’ That doesn’t feel homoerotic in the least—not that there would be anything wrong if it did—but it’s just like an ‘I love you, man’ type of thing.”
Foley knew right away that the spot had landed exactly as planned. He described the moment as freeing and said it gave him a feeling he’d been chasing for years.
“So I felt the giant weight off my shoulders—which was the elusive magic WrestleMania moment. So even when I went through the table… it was hot, you know. I’ve got hairy forearms anyway—and I usually tape up to about here. Everything below the tape was intact. Everything above—gone.”
As wild as that moment was, Foley added that Edge actually took the worse burn of the two.
“Edge worked the next night… he worked the next night with his eyelashes gone.”
For Foley, it wasn’t about the fire or the pain—it was about finally delivering that legendary WrestleMania moment. And with Edge by his side, he got it in one of the most unforgettable ways possible.
