Rey Mysterio’s WrestleMania 41 status just got more complicated—and WWE still isn’t offering a clear answer.
During the WrestleMania Countdown pre-show, Michael Cole officially acknowledged that Mysterio was hurt during his SmackDown match, calling it a “legitimate injury.” However, Cole didn’t go as far as to say the WWE Hall of Famer would miss his scheduled bout against El Grande Americano.
The vagueness has only fueled speculation. As PWInsider reported earlier, “The Rey Mysterio injury last night on WWE Friday Night SmackDown was 100% legitimate.” And Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez added in a subscriber update that “Dragon Lee is the likely replacement if [Rey] can’t wrestle.” He also noted that Rey Fenix is another name being considered, though WWE may not want to beat him in his first big match.
Rey was originally set to represent the legacy of Lucha Libre against WWE’s newest masked star—who’s believed to be Chad Gable under the El Grande Americano persona. But with just hours to go before Night One of WrestleMania, the clock is ticking.
Despite the injury and backstage scrambling, WWE is still promoting the match as if it’s happening. Earlier today, the company tweeted, “WWE Hall of Famer @reymysterio competes at #WrestleMania TONIGHT against WWE’s newest sensation @Americano_WWE!”
So what’s the real deal? That’s anyone’s guess right now—but the fact that Michael Cole addressed the injury without confirming a status change only adds to the mystery.
