Michael Cole has called some of the biggest matches in WWE history, but even one of the most experienced voices in wrestling admits there are moments he wishes he could take back. One of those moments came during the historic WrestleMania main event between Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair — a match that carried enormous significance for WWE and its fans.
While reflecting on his long broadcasting career on The Sal Licata Show, Cole was asked whether there were any calls he regretted. He acknowledged that mistakes are part of live television, especially when delivering commentary for hours at a time without breaks. Still, one particular error stood out because of how important the moment was.
Cole explained that broadcasting live comes with constant pressure, noting that even the best announcers can’t deliver perfection every single time. He compared the experience to pitching in baseball, saying that mistakes are inevitable in such a demanding role.
“Every day, uh, every every every show there's something happens, right? This is live television. We're saying a million words a night. Uh, you're always going to mess up. You're always going to screw up. You're always going to have an issue. Uh, you know, I want to throw a perfect game, but how many perfect games have been in the history of Major League Baseball, right? You're never going to throw a perfect game, most likely.”
He then pointed to the WrestleMania match between Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair as the moment that stuck with him the most. That match marked a milestone in WWE history, as it was the first time two Black women headlined WrestleMania. Cole admitted that when the finish unfolded, he made an error that left him feeling embarrassed afterward.
“You might throw a no hitter. You might throw a one-hitter. I had a massive screw up in the WrestleMania where Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair uh headlined WrestleMania. The first time two African-Americans had had headlined women had headlined the main event at WrestleMania. And um I screwed up at the finish. Um I and it it was just I was embarrassed by it.”
Cole revealed that the mistake weighed heavily on him after the show, especially given how meaningful the match was to WWE’s history. He took responsibility immediately and made sure to address it directly with the competitors involved.
“I apologized to both of the women afterward. They understand that things happen. The fans have never to this day let me forget about it. But it is something I regretted. I'd love to have it back if I could, but it's just one of those moments you're in the heat of the moment.”
Moments like this show just how much pressure comes with calling matches live on WWE’s biggest stage. Even veterans with decades of experience can feel the weight of a single misstep, especially during historic matches that carry lasting significance.
