Mercedes Moné just captured the Winnipeg Pro Wrestling Women’s Championship, but not everyone is happy about it. A wave of criticism hit the promotion, with one fan accusing them of “selling out” to AEW and catering to Moné’s so-called “belt collector” gimmick. But the promotion didn’t let that slide—they fired back with zero hesitation.
After Moné’s win, a fan slammed Winnipeg Pro Wrestling on Twitter, accusing the promotion of disrespecting its homegrown talent just to appease Moné. The fan didn’t hold back, even dragging Don Callis into the mess.
“Hope it was worth selling out your women’s division to appease Mercedes Moan’s ‘belt collector’ scheme. I would say I’m appalled you undermined your own women’s division to appease an egomaniac, but then I realized this is the same city that gave us Don Callis… #StupidIdiots”
The promotion clapped back with a sarcastic laugh, reminding everyone how far they’ve come from small-time shows to sold-out venues.
“Lmao Selling out our women’s division? What do you think this is? We run shows for fun, I am not Herb Abram’s. We used to do shows for 300 people in a dive bar, Sunday we sold out a 1600 seat venue. Over 1000 sold for our Feb show with a symphony orchestra. The fuck are you talking about hahhahaha.”
But that wasn’t enough for the critic, who doubled down and accused them of betraying their women’s roster just to fit Moné into a narrative.
“You gave your top women’s title to an egomaniac from a bigger company just to fit her silly belt collector gimmick. You hurt the women who worked hard for your promotion. You sold out to Tony Khan and a failing AEW. Full stop.”
Winnipeg Pro Wrestling wasn’t having it. They made it clear they’re still committed to their own talent—and bringing in top indie stars isn’t a sellout move, it’s strategy.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about, it’s all good man. The women who bust their asses off for our promotion will continue to get booked, and we’ll keep bringing in the best women on the indies. And now they have a CEO to beat. She’s in Italy in a few weeks defending the Bestya Championship, with 3 of their very best. Sounds pretty dope to me!”
Moné’s presence has helped drive major attention and attendance for the company. The AEW TBS Champion has brought new eyes to the Winnipeg scene—and the promotion is standing by its choice to crown her as their women’s champion. For them, this isn’t about selling out—it’s about stepping up.
Do you think Winnipeg Pro Wrestling made the right call by putting their title on Mercedes Moné? Or should they have stuck with their regular roster? Sound off in the comments..
