AEW may be pulling the trigger early on one of its biggest potential women’s matches—Mercedes Mone vs. Athena might not be waiting until summer after all.
According to Fightful Select, the match is “in the plans for All Elite Wrestling this year,” and could happen “as soon as AEW Dynasty.” While nothing is confirmed for the April pay-per-view just yet, the timing lines up—especially after the two shared an in-ring face-off shortly after the report dropped.
Many assumed AEW was saving the match for All In: Texas, especially given Athena’s strong ties to the area. But sources say there are other creative pitches for that event, and that “the two weren’t put in the same tournament on accident,” referring to their involvement in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament. AEW seems to be building to this collision—it’s just a matter of when.
Adding to that, it’s also being said that Mercedes and The Renegades—Robyn and Charlette—“had again pitched working together,” which led to Mercedes facing Robyn Renegade on AEW programming. As for Charlette, she’s expected to make her return soon after being absent from AEW and ROH action for all of 2024.
Mercedes has made it clear she’s here to elevate the entire division, and facing Athena—arguably one of the most dominant women in ROH—would be a massive moment for both stars.
Do you want to see Mercedes Mone vs. Athena at Dynasty, or should AEW save it for All In? And should The Renegades get more screen time in this feud? Sound off in the comments—we want your take.
