Mercedes Moné wasted no time stirring up the crowd in Mexico City before her big championship match.
Before her match to defend the CMLL Women’s World Championship against Persephone on March 6 at Arena México, Moné decided to send a message to the fans — and it definitely got their attention. Just before the match got underway, Moné put on a lucha-style mask while standing in the ring. She then turned toward the crowd and raised both middle fingers in their direction. The Arena México crowd immediately erupted with loud boos.
Fans inside the venue made it clear they weren’t amused by the gesture, showering Moné with heavy heat as she leaned into the moment and soaked up the reaction. The taunt came right before her main event match against Persephone during CMLL’s “The Night of the Amazonas” event, an all-women show held in honor of International Women’s Day.
The two competitors already had history going into the match. Persephone previously came up short against Moné in earlier encounters, including a title defense in CMLL and a multi-woman match at Forbidden Door. With the crowd already firmly against her after flipping them off, Moné walked into the match in full villain mode as the boos continued pouring down.
One thing was clear before the bell even rang — the Arena México crowd was more than ready to see Persephone try to take the championship away from the “CEO.”
Did Mercedes Moné’s taunt make the match more entertaining, or did she push the crowd too far before the fight even started? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
