Mercedes Mone’s debut in AEW had a major impact on the promotion’s landscape. As a celebrity, she understands the highs and lows of fame, and now Mone has called out aggressive fans who struggle to separate her from her on-screen character.
While speaking to Katee Sackhoff, Mercedes Mone was asked if it’s hard for her to be two different people, her real self and her wrestling character, and if people understand the difference.
Mone said that most people don’t understand it, especially in wrestling. Wrestling feels like a 24/7 fantasy world, not just for the wrestlers but also for the fans. Wrestlers are like superheroes because they are on TV several times a week, always playing their characters.
Because of this, she is almost always in character, even on social media. That’s just how she presents herself every day. She noted that the people don’t really know the real Mercedes Varnado because she doesn’t get to show that side. The person fans see on TV is completely different from who she really is.
“I don’t think people understand that at all in, um, the line of work that I do. Because wrestling, um, is like living a 24/7 fantasy world—not only for wrestlers but for wrestling fans. We are legit superheroes to our audience because we are on a weekly schedule, TV multiple times a week.
So I’m always kind of living in my character, always kind of living and playing in it, whether it’s on Twitter, um, social media—just because that’s, that’s kind of who I am on a daily. So people don’t know who Mercedes Varnado is because I don’t—I don’t get the opportunity to show them. That’s not who they get to see on TV. It’s someone that’s totally different than what my wrestling character is.”
The TBS Champion stated that she likes having that separation because it lets her have a private life. When she’s at home, she can relax, be with her dogs, and enjoy her own space without acting like a larger-than-life character. Mone simply loves having that time to just be herself.
However, social media makes things more difficult for her. She added that fans often think she is the same person they see on TV, and sometimes they can be too aggressive, and she called them out on the same. That can be frustrating, but she prefers playing a character rather than showing her real self to the public all the time.
“But I love that because I love to be able to have my private life when I’m not being a wrestler—when I get to be home and get to be with my dogs and just get to chill out and be in my own head, in my own environment. It’s the best feeling, knowing that I don’t have to play such a larger-than-life character when I’m at home. Like, I—I love that.
But at the same time, dealing with social media, people just legit think that I’m this character on TV. So sometimes that gets—it’s annoying, whether, um, you know, fans can be aggressive with who they think that I am. But, um, I’d rather play a role of somebody else than, you know, playing Mercedes Varnado on a daily for these people.”
That’s not all, as Mercedes Mone even criticized male wrestlers for blocking women’s opportunities in the industry. Therefore, it’s very understandable why Mercedes Mone can get annoyed by fans who simply don’t understand that she isn’t the character she portrays on television and we hope that eventually changes.
