Becky Lynch retained her WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship on the October 20th episode of RAW—but not without controversy. Her match against Maxxine Dupri ended in a disqualification after Lynch struck Dupri in the back of the head with the title belt. Fans were already angry at the outcome, but now a new revelation from Natalya puts the entire situation in a different light.
During an appearance on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, Natalya revealed that Maxxine Dupri was seriously under the weather when she stepped in the ring against Lynch that night. According to Natalya, Maxxine had lost her voice and was sick, but still chose to perform—and never once asked to be pulled from the show.
Natalya praised Maxxine’s relentless work ethic and passion, saying the RAW match was one of the best of her career. She detailed just how much Maxxine was going through that night and how it all played out behind the scenes:
“She had a match against Becky on Raw—her most recent match with Becky—she had lost her voice. She was really sick. And she didn’t tell anyone. She was pushing through, but she sent me a little voice note during the day like, ‘I’m doing great, everything’s going great—I just lost my voice. I can’t talk.’”
Despite the setback, Maxxine stepped up in a match that would end up being marred by Becky Lynch’s actions. Lynch took the easy way out, bashing Dupri with the championship belt and taking the disqualification loss to walk out with her title intact. But for Maxxine, the moment was still huge. Natalya doubled down on how important it is to fight through those moments in WWE, even when your body isn’t at 100%.
“If you’re sick and you’re getting an opportunity to wrestle Becky Lynch—a woman who main-evented WrestleMania—on Monday Night Raw on Netflix? You can’t go up to our bosses, you can’t go up to Triple H and say, ‘Hey, I don’t feel good today. I’ve got laryngitis.’”
She admitted the mindset sounds harsh, but also explained why it’s necessary.
“Now listen, the company’s very forward now. They’ll be like, ‘No problem. We’ll get you home, we’ll take care of you, we’ll get you the best,’ and they’re great. But she doesn’t want to do that. Because she knows that opportunity might not be there again.”
Natalya then made a bold comparison to one of WWE’s biggest stars to hammer home her point.
“Like if it’s WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes can’t just go, ‘Hey, I don’t feel good tonight, I’ve got food poisoning.’ No one cares. No one gives a [__]. If you want something—you’ve got to push through. You’ve got to fight.”
With this new detail, the ending of the match hits even harder. Maxxine was battling through sickness, performing in front of a live crowd on RAW and holding her own against one of WWE’s top stars. And despite giving it everything, she was left laid out by a belt shot while the champ walked away smiling. This behind-the-scenes insight gives fans a new appreciation for Dupri’s grit—and raises real questions about the line between dedication and pressure in today’s WWE.
