Matt Riddle has built a reputation across MMA and professional wrestling, but one of his most talked-about accomplishments goes back to his amateur wrestling days — when he crossed paths with future UFC legend Jon Jones.
During a conversation with Jimmy V3, Riddle was asked about his high school wrestling history and his matchups with Jones. The topic came up while discussing his early athletic background and the level of competition he faced before entering MMA and eventually professional wrestling. Riddle didn’t hesitate to confirm the results and laid out exactly how those encounters played out during tournament competition.
“I won states 2004, he took third. And then earlier in the season at the Windsor Christmas tournament, same thing — I won, he took third. Uh yeah, you know, I always got that victory. I've always won that tournament. So the feathers in his cap, that's a good one. That's one I would list up high if I was listing.”
Even while acknowledging Jones’ legendary status in combat sports, Riddle made it clear that he still takes pride in those wins — especially considering what Jones went on to accomplish later in his career.
“Jon Jones is a beast. He's the man. But you know when you were like 17 and I was 18, I had your number. That's it. Not a big deal.”
Jones would eventually become one of the most dominant fighters in UFC history, which only adds more intrigue to Riddle’s claim that he held the advantage during their early years. That kind of connection between amateur wrestling, MMA, and pro wrestling continues to fuel interest among fans who follow multiple combat sports.
