Matt and Jeff Hardy have been babyfaces since they returned to TNA last year but now Matt Hardy has addressed potentially turning heel in the company.

While speaking to WrestleZone, Matt Hardy was asked if he and Jeff Hardy could successfully pull off a heel turn now, considering how beloved they both still are. He admitted that it would be challenging, but it’s not entirely out of the question.

Hardy compared their situation to that of John Cena, noting how difficult it was to turn Cena heel because of how much fans loved him. Matt believes the same dynamic exists, especially with Jeff Hardy, who remains incredibly popular with fans.

“It would—it would be challenging, but it’s—it’s something… this is weird. I don’t want to compare us to John Cena, but I think there’s some—you could kind of compare it to that in some way. Like, it’s very hard to turn John Cena heel because he is so beloved, right? And I think you have that, especially with Jeff, because Jeff is so beloved.”

Hardy said that if he and Jeff were to do something that gradually evolved into a heelish act, it could ultimately make them even bigger babyfaces in the long run. He felt that a heel run would give them a fresh look and add more depth and layers to their characters.

However, he questioned whether they could ever truly be a heel team that fans would hate forever, doubting that possibility just as he doubts it for Cena. He also pointed out how WWE has teased Cena turning babyface again, which he believes will eventually happen.

“But I—I think both of us together, I think we could—I honestly think if we did something and we evolved into something that could be viewed as heelish, I think when it was all said and done, it would just make us bigger babyfaces. And it would be a fresh coat of paint on us. And I think it would make us new and give us more layers and more dimensions when it was all said and done.

Could we be a heel team that is forever hated? I—I don’t know if that’s possible. I don’t think it’s going to be possible for John Cena. And I like how they’re even teasing that he might turn back babyface, which I think ultimately he will.

But with myself and Jeff, I kind of feel like we exist in that same regard in some ways. We could do it for a little while and we could play that role. We could try and make some people. But then I think at the end of the day, people are still ultimately going to cheer for us, because we’re—we’re such beloved figures from a lot of people’s childhood now.”

We will have to wait and see whether Matt and Jeff Hardy will end up turning heel in TNA somewhere down the line, as it could definitely change things up and make them even more interesting as a tag team.
