Matt Cardona’s future in AEW and ROH remains uncertain, and now Sean Ross Sapp has weighed in on why things never moved forward.
During the Fightful Select Q&A podcast, Sapp was asked why Cardona’s ROH run never turned into something more, especially after his high-profile feud with Chris Jericho for the ROH World Title. His response cleared up a lot of speculation.
“He didn’t sign. I don’t know if a contract was offered, but I hadn’t heard of any intent to sign there. He’s on good terms with them, and they were happy with that.”
Cardona had already debunked reports that AEW offered him a contract, despite Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer claiming otherwise. The self-proclaimed Indy God made it clear that while he had a strong run in ROH, including a well-received match against Jericho at Hammerstein Ballroom, it never led to an official deal.
“Month or so ago, I got called, ‘Hey, you wanna wrestle Chris Jericho at Hammerstein Ballroom?’ Hell yeah, I do! Ring of Honor, another guy I grew up idolizing. We do the weeks of TV, getting great reactions in-house, social media, best-selling shirt of the week, killer match at Hammerstein Ballroom. I got nothing. Even Dave Meltzer reported I got a contract. Sorry, Dave, you’re wrong, I didn’t get one.”
With AEW seemingly never having serious plans to sign Cardona, it remains unclear what’s next for him. Fans loved his run in ROH, but unless something changes, his future with the company remains in limbo.
