Matt Cardona just revealed that his SmackDown main event appearance almost didn’t happen at all.
Just a day after SmackDown, Cardona admitted he wasn’t originally scheduled to be on the show. Instead, he said he was supposed to be attending Square Circle Expo before plans suddenly changed and he found himself back in a WWE main event after years away.
Cardona explained that the moment meant a lot to him, especially after spending nearly six years working outside WWE and grinding on the independent scene to get another opportunity.
“Originally I was supposed to be at @SquarCircleExpo last night. (Check out the @CollectMajor booth all weekend) I was gone from @WWE for almost 6 years. Every weekend, I’d be at different wrestling shows doing whatever it took to get back to WWE. I got back. I was in the main event of SmackDown last night. I’ll take that as a win.”
Even though he ended up losing the match to Randy Orton, Cardona made it clear he walked into the fight knowing he wasn’t at full strength after suffering an arm injury the week before.
“@RandyOrton injured my arm last week. I didn’t want to fight Randy last night to win. I was fighting to show Randy that he can’t just go around and do whatever he wants and expect to get away with it. I was at a disadvantage, but that’s not an excuse. I wanted the fight and I got my ass kicked. I lost.”
Still, Cardona ended his message with a statement that makes it clear he’s not planning to disappear after the loss.
“I’M NOT FINISHED!”
Cardona ultimately fell to Randy Orton after the veteran targeted his injured arm throughout the match and sealed the win with an RKO in the SmackDown main event. With Cardona now admitting he wasn’t even supposed to be there, it adds another layer to what was already a huge moment in his return run.
Do you think Matt Cardona earned another shot after stepping into a match he wasn’t even scheduled for, or should Randy Orton move on to his next target? Let us know your thoughts and leave your feedback.
