Matt Cardona has been doing extremely well on the independent wrestling scene in recent years, but there are still a few big names he hopes to face, one of them being John Cena. In fact, he reached out to Cena about having a match at a GCW event, but the match never ended up happening.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Matt Cardona was asked about opponents he still wanted to wrestle. Cardona revealed that he tried to get John Cena to wrestle him at Hammerstein Ballroom for The People vs. GCW event earlier this year.

Cardona had a mystery opponent planned and decided to take a big chance by reaching out to Cena. While Cena couldn’t make it happen, Cardona said he gave it a shot and there was some back-and-forth communication.

Cardona explained that he needed a big opponent for the show and admitted that the idea of Cena returning at the Hammerstein Ballroom, a place known for the “If Cena wins, we riot” crowd, would have been wild. In the end, it didn’t work out, but Cardona still sees the future as open. Instead of Cena, the match featured Tommy Invincible and Cardona made quick work of Invincible.

“Listen, I pitched Cena to wrestle me at Hammerstein Ballroom, GCW, this year because I had this mystery opponent. I reached out, I threw the Hail Mary. Obviously, he couldn’t do it—but I tried. Yeah, it was a back and forth, a question and a response—but I tried.

‘Cause I knew I needed an opponent for Hammerstein Ballroom, and what if it’s Cena? Could you imagine if he came back at the Ballroom because ‘If Cena wins, we riot?’ It wasn’t meant to be, but hey, we got some time left. Him coming would’ve been nuts—but instead, we got Tommy Invincible.”

Although the GCW dream match never happened, Matt Cardona still remains hopeful. The fact that he reached out to someone as big as John Cena shows how dedicated he is to creating memorable moments, not just wrestling matches. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Cardona will ever each the chance to face Cena again before Cena retires this year.
