Matt Cardona Returns to WWE on SmackDown in Name Switch From Zack Ryder

WWE has seen several Superstars leave the company for one reason or another and come back. This week on SmackDown, it was Matt Cardona’s turn.

WWE SmackDown’s January 2, 2026 episode went down at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. This was a big night for the blue brand, as we saw the former Zack Ryder return to action in the WWE ring.

Kit Wilson came out during SmackDown this week. He had a brand-new entrance and he called the Bills Mafia “toxic.” Then Zack Ryder’s music hit. The name on the screen vanished and changed to Matt Cardona, making this his debut while using that name.

It was later announced as the match got going that Matt Cardona is now officially part of the SmackDown roster once again. This was noted as a big free agency signing.

WWE fans last saw Matt Cardona as he appeared during the Last Time Is Now Tournament. He didn’t win the tournament as he competed as Zack Ryder, but now he is back under his real name.

We will have to see what Matt Cardona does next. His WWE release was over half a decade ago, but he used that time to make a real name for himself, under his real name. Now he is back in WWE for another run as he has inked a new deal.
