Mark Mero is opening up about a little-known chapter from his WWE run, revealing how landing one of the first guaranteed contracts in the company didn’t just change his career — it also created unexpected tension inside the locker room. He shared the details during his interview with Chris Van Vliet, shedding light on the backstage reality of the wrestling business during the 1990s boom.

During the conversation, Mero explained how his move from WCW to WWE came with major financial security that was rare at the time. Along with a guaranteed deal, he also received a signing bonus, something that made him stand out among the roster. While it seemed like a dream opportunity on paper, he said the reaction behind the scenes quickly made him realize that not everyone was happy about his situation.

“Next thing you know, I'm the first guy that gets this not only guaranteed contract, a big signing bonus on top of it. And then I started realizing that no one really wants to work with me and you're kind of an outcast and it's the worst feeling in the world.”

Mero continued by explaining that the timing of his deal made the situation even more uncomfortable. He pointed out that several wrestlers who would later become major stars had joined WWE shortly before him, yet didn’t receive the same kind of contract security that he did. That difference made him feel like he had a target on his back despite simply accepting the opportunity offered to him.

“You know, part of it is, I guess, you know, when you think about Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mick Foley just came in months before me for an opportunity. Next thing you know, I'm the first guy that gets this not only guaranteed contract, a big signing bonus on top of it.”

The situation gave Mero a firsthand look at how locker room dynamics worked during one of wrestling’s most competitive eras. At a time when guaranteed contracts were far from standard, his deal represented a major shift in how WWE handled talent — but it also created resentment that affected his working relationships with other wrestlers.

What do you think about Mark Mero saying his guaranteed WWE contract made him feel like an outcast backstage, and do you believe locker room jealousy played a bigger role in wrestling careers during that era? Let us know your thoughts and leave your feedback.
