Mark Henry isn’t shy about what really went down at WrestleMania 22—and according to him, he dominated The Undertaker from start to finish.
While speaking to Inside the Ropes, Henry explained that his match against the Deadman wasn’t about who won—it was about making Undertaker look beatable for the first time in years. Henry admitted that although the match ended with Undertaker victorious, everything from the match layout to the visuals was designed to shake fans’ confidence in the streak.
“I was the only one that whooped his ass in WrestleMania. Go back and look at the match. I beat him from pillar to post and he won. All the pictures are me choking him and dropping something on him and catching him and throwing him.”
The strategy behind the match was deliberate. With Taker racking up win after win every year, WWE needed fans to start questioning whether he could be beaten.
“I dominated that match because they wanted him to be put in a situation where it looked like he can be beat. Because Undertaker at that point—he had beat so many people and he had got to the point to where everybody just expected him to win.”
Even without breaking the streak, Henry said his performance served a larger purpose—and it’s something he takes serious pride in.
“Just to say that I was a part of a process that helped humanize the Undertaker—I can go to my grave and be happy with that.”
Whether fans noticed it at the time or not, Henry’s match was a pivotal shift in how WWE presented The Undertaker at WrestleMania. It wasn’t about winning—it was about creating doubt, and Mark Henry played that role to perfection.
