The wrestling world is mourning the loss of “Silent” Brian Mackney, a beloved figure in the Toronto wrestling scene and a proud alum of Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling.
The news was confirmed by Scott D’Amore’s Maple Leaf Pro promotion, who paid tribute to the deaf wrestler whose impact reached far beyond Canada.
“MAPLE LEAF PRO is saddened to hear of the passing today of ‘Silent’ Brian Mackney, a Maple Leaf Wrestling alumni and legend in Toronto,” the statement began.
Brian Mackney’s wrestling journey spanned multiple decades and continents. He gained notoriety in the 1970s and 1980s, captivating fans in Toronto and around the world with his grit and heart. He wrestled for major international promotions, including New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Japan Pro Wrestling, and competed across several NWA territories, including Mid-Atlantic. When the WWF expanded into Toronto, Mackney continued to perform under Vince McMahon’s banner.
But what made his story truly inspiring was how he overcame adversity. Despite being deaf, Mackney never let that hold him back from a successful wrestling career. Maple Leaf Pro recognized this in their tribute:
“Remarkably, Brian Mackney accomplished all of this as a deaf person, showing that his hearing impairment would not slow him down – he rose above it all and accomplished what many do not.”
Mackney was recently honored at a Maple Leaf Pro event this past May, held at the iconic Maple Leaf Gardens, where he was in attendance — a fitting tribute to a man who helped shape the region’s wrestling identity.
“We were humbled to have ‘Silent’ Brian in attendance this past May for our event at the former Maple Leaf Gardens and we are proud of his place and legacy in Maple Leaf Wrestling history.”
Maple Leaf Pro closed their message with a heartfelt note:
“We send our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and fans of the Silent Warrior during this time.”
Brian Mackney’s legacy as “The Silent Warrior” will live on — not just as a wrestler, but as a symbol of perseverance, strength, and love for the business.
