WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria might have one of the most layered gimmicks in the game, but to fans? She’s just the “bird lady.”
In a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, Valkyria finally broke down the origin of her ring name and aesthetic—and how mythology and fan memes collided to create her unexpected nickname.
“It was related to the Valkyrie,” she said when explaining how she chose the name. “So it’s still tied to my book and my favorite stuff, and I love mythology. So yeah, that’s where it all comes from.”
But despite the symbolism behind her character, fans online have boiled it all down to one word. Chris pointed out, “In your Instagram bio, you’ve got ‘bird lady.’ Lyra responded, “Yeah. Well, that’s—that’s just what all this deep meaning behind it and everyone’s just like, ‘Ah, bird,’” she laughed.
Still, she’s not mad at it. In fact, she embraces the nickname. “Yeah, well, whatever. If people like it, they can call me bird lady. I think it’s fine. I think—I think it’s the idea if they remember you, you’re doing something right. Bird ladies are cool, right?”
When the interviewer joked that the name reminded him of the pigeon lady from Home Alone 2, Valkyria laughed and replied, “That’s definitely not what you are.”
She even recalled a popular fan GIF she keeps seeing. “There’s like a GIF of this pigeon that flies straight at the camera, and I get that a lot. But now that I’m the champion, people have put a little title on the pigeon,” she said. “Pigeon looks great. It just changes the whole GIF. Like the pigeon looks so excited with the title. And I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s meant to be.’”
Whether you call her the Valkyrie or the bird lady, Lyra Valkyria is making sure fans remember her name—deep lore or not.
