Lita spent eight years as a full-time WWE Superstar, putting her body through constant punishment. But one of the most serious injuries of her career went completely unnoticed—until a doctor saw her X-rays.
While speaking with The Toronto Sun, the WWE Hall of Famer revealed that ongoing lower back pain eventually sent her to get checked out, and what she learned caught her completely off guard.
“I had times when it was really bothering me. I mean, even when I was actively competing.”
What she expected to be routine wear-and-tear turned into a shocking discovery once the doctor reviewed her imaging.
“I remember my lower back, I went in because it was bothering me and the doctor said, ‘Well, when did you break your back?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know,’ and they’re like, ‘Yeah, I’m seeing here on the X-ray, you’ve broken your back.’”
At some point during her wrestling career, Lita had fractured her back and unknowingly kept performing through it.
“So, at some point I’d broken my back and just kept going and that might have been why it was hurting me.”
Looking back now, Lita says her post–full-time career has been about one thing above all else: feeling good. Seeing the physical condition of many former wrestlers has made her more mindful of what she put her body through.
“I’ve really prioritized feeling good and having my body feel good in my post-full-time career. Because I do see so many of my former co-workers and other legends and it just reminds me every day what I put my body through.”
Despite the damage, she also expressed gratitude for how well her body has recovered after finally allowing it time to heal.
“Gosh, the regenerative power that your body does have—but you do have to give it the opportunity to heal, which I have. I’m so thankful that I do feel good now and wake up most days feeling awesome. I’m thankful for it every day.”
Lita’s last in-ring appearance came at WrestleMania 39, where she teamed with Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus. And even after learning she once wrestled with a broken back, she hasn’t completely shut the door on returning—saying in the same interview that she wouldn’t rule out another match if the right opportunity came along.
Knowing what she endured without even realizing it, should Lita ever step back into the ring again—or has she already given enough of her body to wrestling? Let us know what you think and leave your thoughts in the comments.
