Linda McMahon is one step closer to taking charge of the Department of Education.
The former WWE CEO and Small Business Administration leader just cleared a major hurdle in her nomination process, securing a 12-11 party-line approval from the Senate HELP Committee. Now, only a final Senate confirmation vote stands between her and the top education job in the country.
McMahon, who was nominated by President Trump, faced tough questions during her confirmation hearings, but she remained firm on her vision. She acknowledged Trump’s past criticism of the department, stating that abolishing it “would require congressional approval”. Instead of eliminating it, she vowed to “improve efficiency and reduce bureaucracy” while ensuring that crucial funding programs—Title I for low-income schools, Pell Grants for college students, and the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program—remain intact.
She also committed to enforcing Trump’s executive orders, including policies on transgender athletes in school sports, antisemitism regulations, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in educational institutions.
Republican senators were quick to back her, with Senator Bill Cassidy, chairman of the HELP Committee, praising her leadership skills. “Her extensive experience in managing large organizations will be invaluable in streamlining the Department of Education and improving outcomes.”
Now, all eyes are on the final Senate vote. If confirmed, McMahon will take on one of the most scrutinized roles in the government, shaping policies that impact millions of students across the country.
