Leila Grey isn’t hiding from what she calls her “most embarrassing moment” in AEW—and she’s turning the situation into something empowering.
During her June 1, 2025 appearance on Hey! (EW) with RJ City, the AEW star finally addressed the infamous wig incident from her November 1, 2024 match against Queen Aminata on Rampage.
RJ brought up the viral moment bluntly, noting the unique dynamics of wrestling’s fanbase and how some viewers may not grasp the cultural nuances of wigs in wrestling.
“On the November 1st, 2024 episode of Rampage, which apparently used to be a show we did… you wrestled Queen Aminata, and during the course of the match your hair became altered. Now the majority of wrestling fans are older white men. Can you explain to them exactly what happened?”
Leila didn’t hesitate to explain what went down.
“Well, a lot of us wrestlers, we wear wigs. And I mean, that day I was just caught off guard with the match. I was not expecting to wrestle and I had to wrestle and things weren’t fully secure.”
When RJ asked who was to blame, she responded without flinching:
“Yours. Yes, it is my fault. I’m not going to blame anybody else. I take full accountability for that mishap.”
Leila also made sure to give props to her opponent:
“And Queen Aminata—I mean, if anybody’s been in the ring with her, she’s not easy. She is not an easy opponent. So, the worst happened. Probably my most embarrassing moment in AEW… but you know what? I think it was a blessing in disguise.”
She then cleared up misconceptions about why she wore wigs in the first place.
“People have this misconception that I wore wigs because I didn’t like my hair. I do like my hair. I think my hair is great.”
RJ teased her with a quip:
“You were just hiding it for years until you had to reveal it on television.”
To which Leila replied:
“It’s a lot of maintenance. It’s a lot of maintenance. But since I got exposed, now I’m forced to show it off just to prove that I’m confident in my hair. It wasn’t me not being confident in it.”
And she closed with a message that many fans needed to hear:
“Everybody take it from me. Rock your natural hair, love it, embrace it, and yeah, it’s who you are. I’m not saying I’m never going to straighten my hair or never going to wear extensions again, but I’m enjoying showing it off.”
Leila Grey could’ve let the wig slip define her, but instead, she’s using it as a message of ownership, self-love, and growth—on her terms.
