Kyle Fletcher is riding high as AEW’s TNT Champion, but before locking in his future with Tony Khan’s company, he had WWE knocking on his door — and the attention left him stunned.
Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, Fletcher admitted that WWE showed serious interest in him and Aussie Open partner Mark Davis before they joined AEW in 2023. For a lifelong WWE fan, the experience was surreal.
“Kind of mind-blowing. Coming up and being a fan of WWE, just the fact that they were like, ‘We want to talk to you and get on a Zoom call with you,’” Fletcher said. “It was weird to let that sink in. ‘Ah, okay, I guess I’m a real wrestler now.’”
Despite WWE’s interest, Fletcher explained that AEW already felt like the right fit. Their early appearances in the company and the way Tony Khan treated them made the choice easier.
“It was the fact that we [Aussie Open] had come in before signing, and we kind of understood the vibe and how Tony treated us and other people,” Fletcher said. “We trusted that it would be the best place for us to grow. The way I’m standing here today, we made the right choice.”
That decision has paid off in a huge way. When Davis went down with an injury, Fletcher broke out as a singles star, joined the Don Callis Family, and captured his first singles championship in AEW. His first TNT title defense went down on Saturday’s Collision, proving AEW’s faith in him is already being rewarded.
Kyle Fletcher’s leap from being courted by WWE to thriving in AEW shows how quickly careers can take off when the right move is made. Now, with gold around his waist and a prime spot on AEW TV, he’s looking like one of the company’s future top players.
