For decades, fans dreamed of seeing Sting go face-to-face with The Undertaker at WrestleMania. But now we finally have a definitive answer on why that dream match never became reality—and it all comes down to Vince McMahon.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer pulled back the curtain on WWE’s refusal to book Sting vs. The Undertaker in 2014 after Sting officially joined the company. According to Meltzer, Vince never believed Sting was on the same level as The Deadman, and that personal opinion killed any shot of the match happening.

“That’s a Vince call. And in hindsight, I guess the answer is no. He never saw the big thing in it that a lot of people did. He could have done it. Many people would have wanted him to do it. I don’t think he saw Sting at the level of Undertaker. And he didn’t do it.”

Meltzer added that under a different regime, the story might have ended differently:

“I think if somebody else was in charge, there would have been a pretty decent shot of it. But with Vince in charge? No. Vince didn’t know Sting. His idea, his thought on the Sting–Undertaker thing was: it’s something, yeah, it’s a dream match to some people—but not to our audience. And he was wrong. But that was his mentality.”

So there it is—the biggest dream match WWE never booked was never even seriously on the table, all because Vince McMahon didn’t think Sting was a big enough deal for his audience. Despite Sting’s legacy in WCW and beyond, that respect never translated under Vince’s watch.

The decision left many fans wondering what could’ve been—and based on Meltzer’s comments, we were never even close.

Do you think Vince made the wrong call by passing on Sting vs. The Undertaker? Or was he right that it wasn’t meant for WWE’s audience? Drop your thoughts in the comments—we want to hear from you.
