WWE often honors its history while appealing to a new generation of fans through nostalgia. This was very apparent after WWE brought back the iconic Winged Eagle Championship during Saturday Night’s Main Event, and now the reason behind its return has been revealed.
According to Andrew Zarian on Twitter, a major reason why WWE brought back the Winged Eagle was due to merchandise sales, specifically replica title belts for the Winged Eagle. He mentioned that someone at WWE had told him months ago that strong sales of the replica belts would play a big part in making the Winged Eagle design a more regular feature.
“Will add a bit more. Months ago I had a conversation regarding this with someone at WWE. I was told that merch sales (replica title belt sales) would be play a big part in making this a regular thing.“
The iconic Winged Eagle Championship had been part of WWE from 1988 and 1998 and Cody Rhodes had been lobbying for its return for a very long time now, which is why it was such a big moment for just not Cody Rhodes but fans as well after WWE brought back the Winged Eagle.
Fans may get to see the Winged Eagle Championship again on WWE television as Kevin Owens took the title with him after putting Cody Rhodes on the shelf following Saturday Night’s Main Event and he would then declare ownership of the title, as he uploaded a photo of himself with the belt and simply writing, “Mine,” in the caption.
As WWE continues to honor its past while focusing on the future, the return of the Winged Eagle Championship shows that nostalgia and fan demand still heavily influence the company’s creative decisions. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Kevin Owens will continue to use the title in his storylines moving forward.
