Kenny Omega returned to wrestling back in January this year after a battle with diverticulitis. While fans are glad he can still wrestle now, it appears he’s still dealing with a lot of issues in his day-to-day life and especially after big matches.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Kenny Omega explained that he’s dealing with a lot of difficulties right now, the biggest being multiple adhesions in his stomach. Whenever he has to breathe heavily, engage his core, twist, or stretch, those adhesions pull and bind to his internal organs. When they start to tear apart, it causes a lot of discomfort and brings on flu-like symptoms.
“Um, so yeah, it’s—there’s all sorts of difficulties right now. The big one for me is that I have these, you know, I have adhesions in my stomach, quite a few. And when you’re breathing heavy, when you have to use a lot of core, when you have to twist, when you have to stretch, the adhesions are pulling—they’re binding to my inner organ. They’re pulling apart and it’s causing a lot of discomfort. It causes sort of like flu-like symptoms to emerge.”
The Best Bout Machine also made it clear he doesn’t want anyone to feel scared or sorry for him, or to judge his matches differently just because he can’t always move as fast or as consistently as before. It’s not only because of his core and stomach issues, even though those were surgically repaired, there are still many problems he’s working through on a daily basis.
Omega mentioned his last match was the Anarchy in the Arena. A performance like that isn’t just about the match itself but the entire process of putting together those big weekend shows.
That includes planning meetings, meet and greets with executives, dealing with tickets and merchandise, long days that are far more than just showing up with a small bag, changing, and heading to the ring. Especially on pay-per-view weekends, the workload is intense.
“I don’t want people to feel scared or sorry for me or I don’t want anyone’s opinion of a match to be hampered because I just simply can’t move as consistently fast all the time. And it’s not just because of the core. It’s not just because of the stomach and the issues, even though, you know, it has been surgically repaired.
There are still a number of issues that I’m working through and it’s really day-to-day. Like, if I have a match—let me think, when was the last match that I’ve had? I think it was the Anarchy in the Arena, probably. Yeah. Yeah. So even just the Anarchy in the Arena match, it’s like a performance like that—and not just the performance itself, but the process of having to do those gigantic weekend shows where you’re part of the planning process. There’s a lot of meet and greets and stuff like that with executives and all that.
In the case that you have to sort out things like tickets and merchandise and all that, if you have a hand in that, you’re working long hours. It’s not just showing up with a little carry case and like, okay, I’ll get changed and we’ll just head out to the ring and we’ll be done. There’s a lot more to it, especially on the pay-per-view weekends.”
After something like that, Omega said he’ll be stuck in bed until around 5 or 6 p.m. for nearly a whole week. Sometimes it’s five, six, even seven days of just not having the energy to move and that’s been the scariest part for him.
“So after that—and this is not meant to scare anybody—but I’ll be in bed until like 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. for almost an entire week. I might be in bed until 5 or 6 for about five, six, seven days after that. I just don’t have the energy. I can’t move. And that was the most scary part for me, is again…”
The fact that Kenny Omega is still wrestling despite dealing with so many issues in his day-to-day life shows just how dedicated he is to the business even now. Regardless, fans are now looking forward to his match against Kazuchika Okada at All In: Texas next week, so we’ll have to see who will come out on top in the bout.
