Kenny Omega has always been a big supporter of women’s wrestling and wants to help the AEW women’s division grow. In fact, he has now revealed that he’s heard rumors within AEW about a possible mixed tag team tournament taking place.
While speaking during a Twitch stream, Kenny Omega was asked about a female competitor he would like to face in a singles match, and Omega mentioned that there have been discussions within AEW about a potential mixed tag team tournament.
Omega mentioned that Athena would be a great opponent for a singles match, but he’s also interested in the idea of a mixed tag tournament. Omega said he’s been thinking more about tag teams rather than singles matches.
Omega also named some of his favorite wrestlers from STARDOM, like Mayu Iwatani and Starlight Kid, and thought it would be cool to see them team up. He also praised Chihiro Hashimoto, saying she’s incredible but would likely dominate him in the ring.
“I keep hearing every now and then that, you know, it gets tossed around… every now and then in AEW, the ramblings of having the mixed tag matches tournament — oh! Athena would be good (to face in a singles match). She really would be. Yeah, that’d be actually a real good match. But yeah, I keep hearing about the possibility of maybe doing this tournament. So I’ve put more thought into what a tag team would look like, rather than what a singles would look like, and then yeah, someone had said Mayu Iwatani and I’m thinking, yeah, that’d be cool to have her and someone team up or Starlight Kid and somebody team up. Those are two of my favorites from STARDOM for sure right now, and then of course, just countless others that have something special. Chihiro Hashimoto, yes. She’s incredible too. She would dump me on my head so terribly (he laughed).”
With Kenny Omega’s excitement and the potential for a mixed tag team tournament, the future of AEW’s women’s division is looking brighter. The idea of bringing in wrestlers from other promotions like STARDOM also adds an exciting international element, making things even more interesting for fans.
