Katana Chance was released as part of WWE’s latest slew of cuts and many fans felt she never lived up to her potential. Following her WWE exit, Chance has now admitted that WWE never really let her fully find herself as a character.
While speaking on the Lightweights podcast, Katana Chance talked about her time in WWE and said she didn’t really get the chance to figure out who she truly wanted to be.
Chance explained that some wrestlers who came from the independent scene felt lucky just to be at the Performance Center and thought it was the best place to be. But others missed the freedom they used to have before joining WWE, freedom from producers, TV rules, and creative limits.
“A lot of people kind of did a lot of that there because there’s a lot more freedom, you know what I mean? So I always kind of felt like at the Performance Center, I mean, for the people that came from the independents, they were like, ‘Oh, like you being here is the dream.’ You know what I mean? Like, you’re able to be here. This is better than anything. But then some other people would say they got to kind of figure themselves out with the freedom of not having, you know, producers and TV and all of these, like, restrictions on them.”
Chance said that once you’re on TV in WWE, you’re expected to play a certain role right away. Even though you can try out different things, if the company already has a plan for you, it’s hard to do something different.
Chance focused on doing her job and doing what was expected of her, but now she wonders if she should’ve pushed more to figure out her own style and identity. Looking back, the former WWE Superstar feels like she never really had the chance to be her full self or explore what she could have been without all the limits.
“So I don’t know if I ever fully was able to really find myself in it. Because when you’re in there and then you’re getting on TV, you’re kind of put in these spots and you’re needed to be a specific thing right away.
You can try different things and try different characters, but like, if it’s decided kind of where they want you to be, you know, I just kind of wanted to do that and do the right thing and do whatever they needed. And I don’t know if I creatively enough pushed those boundaries to be like, well, even though this is what I’m supposed to do, I need to figure out how to do what I’m supposed to be.
So I think that was an ongoing struggle of mine throughout my journey, which is—I don’t know that I actually ever got to do that. You know what I mean? And fully find if I was myself or, like, whatever I wanted to be with no restrictions, like what it would have been. You know what I mean?”
Katana Chance already changed her persona following her WWE release as she now goes by Kacy Catanazaro again. Nonetheless, we’ll have to see what the future holds for the former WWE Superstar, as she is more than determined to show the world what she is truly capable of.
