John Laurinaitis became one of WWE’s most hated authority figures during the early 2010s, and according to him, the reaction from fans was so intense that some people actually believed the character they saw on television was who he really was.
While appearing on the Perched on the Top Rope podcast, the former WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and on-screen General Manager of Raw and SmackDown reflected on the “People Power” persona that defined his run as an authority figure in WWE storylines.
Laurinaitis explained that WWE creative helped shape the character, which quickly drew strong reactions from audiences. The role placed him in a powerful position on television where he frequently manipulated matches and storylines involving top stars.
“Well, I think it is something special. I mean, the character was really one of a kind at that time. Creative did a great job at helping me perform, to be that character and to actually, you know, play that role.”
The character quickly became one of the most disliked figures on WWE television at the time. Laurinaitis admitted the level of fan reaction surprised him, especially how it carried over outside the arena.
“It was incredible how much heat I had during that role, which kind of transcended after being that role because some fans that watched me as Mr. John Laurinaitis think that’s me, even though it’s just a role I’m playing.”
Laurinaitis went on to say that meeting fans in real-life settings often led to surprising reactions once they realized the on-screen villain wasn’t actually the person they were speaking to.
“But, you know, I would meet people out and they go, ‘Wow, you're not as bad as I thought you were. You're kind of nice actually,’ because all they saw was me coming out and doing the People Power and kind of putting people in matches that maybe I shouldn't.”
Laurinaitis’ run as the “People Power” authority figure placed him in several high-profile storylines during that era, including feuds involving top WWE stars like John Cena. Even years later, the character remains one of the more memorable executive roles in WWE television history.
