The final chapter of John Cena’s in-ring career now has a name attached to it—and it’s none other than the “Ring General” himself. WWE has selected GUNTHER to face Cena in what’s set to be his farewell match on December 13 at a special Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

Dave Meltzer revealed WWE’s internal plans for the event. While a televised storyline tournament may be used to pick Cena’s opponent on paper, the outcome is already set behind the scenes.

“Multiple sources over the last two days have confirmed the name and the WWE internal listing for the Saturday Night Main Event at this point lists that as the only match on the show,” Meltzer wrote. “Two sources have confirmed that the latest plan is for a tournament to be announced, possibly on the air by Paul Levesque, with top wrestlers vying to be Cena’s last opponent. But multiple have confirmed however it reaches the conclusion, that Gunther was the person chosen for the match.”

If that’s the plan, it’s a strong one. Cena built his name as the face of WWE for over a decade, while GUNTHER has earned his spot as one of the most dominant forces of this generation. Their paths couldn’t be more different, but their legacies are about to collide.

If WWE sticks to the internal script, GUNTHER vs John Cena will be a one-match showcase on a night built entirely around the legend’s final bow. This one’s shaping up to be a career-defining moment—for both men.
