John Cena is setting the record straight yet again — he’s not calling the shots when it comes to his farewell tour.
WWE CCO Triple H previously hinted that Brock Lesnar’s rumored SummerSlam return was sparked by Cena’s desire to face The Beast Incarnate one last time before hanging up his boots. But according to Cena, that’s simply not true — and never has been.
Speaking to the Boston Herald, the 17-time world champion made it clear that in over two decades in the business, he’s never picked his opponents.
“I’ve been doing this for 23 years, and I’ve never once chosen my opponent. I’ve always lived by the philosophy that life will give you opportunities every single day, and you have to do the best you can every single day with what life gives you. So whoever challenges me for that last match, I’m going to give it my best shot.”
Cena’s appearance on last Friday’s SmackDown set the stage for his upcoming Clash in Paris match. With just 11 appearances left before he retires, the clock is ticking on his legendary career.
If this really is the final chapter for John Cena, he’s making it clear he’s not here to script his own ending — he’s leaving that up to fate and the WWE machine. Whether that means a blockbuster showdown or a shocking underdog challenger, one thing’s for sure… the last time we hear “Your time is up, my time is now” is going to be an emotional gut punch for fans everywhere.
