John Cena has been part of the DC Cinematic Universe since he is currently portraying the role of Peacemaker. However, it turns out Cena was actually in talks of joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.

While speaking during Fan EXPO, John Cena was asked if there was any project that went unannounced that he was very passionate about but didn’t work out in the end.

Cena explained that the film industry often involves projects that never make it past early talks. He revealed that there were plans at one point for a Duke Nukem project and discussions about roles for him in both the Terminator franchise and Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“That’s the tough thing about film. You can’t get too excited until rubber hits the road. There’s been a ton of stuff. There was a Duke Nukem thing for a while that was supposed to be going on. There was talk of me possibly being in the Terminator universe. There was talk of me in the Marvel universe.”

Cena said that while he wants to give his best to every opportunity, it’s important not to get too excited too early. Frustration often comes from having expectations that aren’t met, so he tries to stay realistic until a project is officially moving forward.

For him, nothing is guaranteed in filmmaking. Once a project is confirmed and production begins, that’s when he fully commits and gives everything, because he knows chances like that don’t come often. While he’s had ideas and hopes for certain roles, he only invests fully when a project is real and locked in.

“You want to give your all to something, but you also have to hedge your enthusiasm. We all get frustrated in life, right? Think of the last time you were frustrated and think of why. It’s always because we have expectations in our head and those expectations get moved or they don’t get met.

When it comes to filmography, you’ve got to be easy on what you expect because nothing is guaranteed. Then when rubber hits the road and they say, ‘We’re making this,’ you’ve got to go hard and you’ve got to invest or you won’t get another chance. So, there have been things that I wanted to work out, but never anything that I’m fully invested in until it’s real.”

From nearly landing roles in Marvel or the Terminator universe to eventually finding his signature superhero role in Peacemaker, John Cena shows that patience can lead to surprising and rewarding opportunities. While it’s a shame he didn’t join the MCU, his current run in the DCU more than makes up for it.
