John Cena has finally broken his silence after his father, John Cena Sr., publicly criticized WWE’s choice for who should retire his son at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

Cena Sr. didn’t hold back in a recent interview with All Axxess, where he voiced his disapproval of GUNTHER being considered for Cena’s final opponent. Instead, he pushed for names like Edge, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, and JBL to be in that role—legends he felt would be more fitting for the end of Cena’s career.

“Well it certainly wouldn’t be Gunther, that’s for sure. I don’t think that that’s a wise move. I don’t think the fans would enjoy that move. Myself, personally, Gunther does not need the rub. By the way, I’m not a fan of on the way out you’ve got to push somebody over the top. You’re supposed to pass quote unquote the torch. I don’t know whether that’s written anywhere in professional wrestling,” said Cena Sr.

Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience, John Cena addressed his dad’s comments—without naming GUNTHER directly—but clearly referencing the recent chatter. He joked about his father’s unique presence in wrestling and how he’s learned to accept his public commentary, even when it crosses the line.

“Man when we sit, there’s some st he’ll say that’s all fked up, he said some s**t yesterday that like ‘I don’t think John’s last opponent should be’, and people listen to him because he’s a wrestling fan.”

Cena went on to admit that while his father’s words can frustrate him, he’s grown to embrace that part of their relationship.

“He’s in the kind of weird subculture zeitgeist. And I want to call my dad and be like ‘What the f**k are you doing? But then like no, he’s doing what he does. This is him. This is the John Cena that I love.”

As Cena prepares for the final match of his career, the WWE Universe will find out tonight who will get the honor of facing him—either LA Knight or GUNTHER—when the finals of the “Last Time is Now” tournament go down on SmackDown.

Fans have their opinions, but so does Cena’s dad—and clearly, so does Cena himself.

Do you agree with Cena Sr., or should Cena’s farewell opponent be someone like GUNTHER who represents the future? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know who you think should send Cena off.
