With John Cena’s retirement match against GUNTHER looming on December 13, the WWE legend is taking time to reflect on a career packed with unforgettable moments. And now, he’s finally revealed the two wrestlers he considers the best he’s ever stepped into the ring with.
During an interview with The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Cena was asked to name the top three opponents of his career. Without hesitation, he gave two names that have defined different eras of wrestling excellence.
“Shawn Michaels, Seth Rollins. It is very tough to narrow it down to a third. I’ve had incredible chemistry with people. It’s tough.”
Cena didn’t just throw out names for shock value. He explained why Shawn Michaels, known to fans as “Mr. WrestleMania,” stood out so strongly.
“He can make [a book] a champion. He would look at that and be like, ‘Okay, I need to bump around for that book, and then I’m going to superkick the book and beautifully fall on top of it.’ His performance.”
He then praised Seth Rollins for falling into that same elite category of performance, adding that Randy Orton, AJ Styles, CM Punk, Kevin Owens, The Rock, and Edge were also names with whom he shared undeniable chemistry. As for what truly sets Michaels and Rollins apart, Cena pointed to their adaptability and consistency.
“Seth is in the same vein. His performance. Randy (Orton) falls into this category. Guys I’ve had crazy chemistry with: AJ Styles, CM Punk, Kevin Owens, Dwayne (The Rock), Edge (Adam Copeland). In 23 years, those are the two because they can work with anyone. I was lucky enough that I was anyone a few nights.”
Cena and Michaels famously headlined WrestleMania 23 and wrestled a full hour on WWE Raw. His series with Rollins spans over 60 singles matches across pay-per-views, television, and live events—a testament to their in-ring chemistry.
As fans prepare to say goodbye to Cena in his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., this look back at his toughest opponents adds another emotional layer to the end of an era.
