WWE’s decision to bring back John Cena as the host of WrestleMania 42 is already sparking debate — and former WWE writer Vince Russo isn’t holding back, claiming the move signals concern behind the scenes.
The reaction came after WWE revealed that Cena, who retired from in-ring competition just months ago, will return in a hosting role for the company’s biggest event of the year. During a discussion on The Coach and Bro show about the announcement, Russo said his immediate reaction wasn’t excitement — it was concern about why the move was being made so close to the show. Russo explained that his opinion came from his instinctive reaction to the timing of the decision, especially with WrestleMania reportedly just weeks away.
“Here’s what I feel when I see this. This is desperation, guys. We’ve literally tried everything. Now we’re bringing back a guy that retired two months ago. This to me just reeks desperation.”
The conversation quickly shifted to ticket pricing, which Russo blamed as the root cause of the situation. According to him, the company may now be scrambling to fix problems created months earlier when ticket prices were first announced. He argued that WWE should have planned more carefully from the beginning instead of relying on last-minute announcements to generate demand.
“We are just going to do everything we possibly can to sell these tickets. Guys, maybe you should have thought about that a year ago when you put these unaffordable prices on tickets.”
Russo didn’t stop there. He doubled down on his belief that the strategy may already be too late to fully correct course, especially with WrestleMania drawing closer.
“Okay, now you’re four weeks away. You think you’re going to pull every rabbit out of the hat and sell out WrestleMania. It’s too little, too late.”
Throughout the discussion, Russo repeatedly returned to one word he believes explains the situation — greed. He argued that aggressive pricing strategies may have backfired and hurt fan interest instead of boosting profits.
“And there’s a word that coach and I use on this show all the time—greed. Greed. Greed. Greed. And what has greed done? It has come back to bite you in the ass.”
Despite John Cena’s massive popularity and history as one of WWE’s biggest stars, Russo made it clear he doesn’t believe the move alone will be enough to solve the issue.
“And I hate to break the news to you, but even John Cena isn’t going to save you this time.”
The criticism adds to ongoing conversations about WrestleMania ticket pricing, fan affordability, and how major wrestling events are promoted in the modern era. While WWE hasn’t publicly responded to the remarks, Cena’s involvement still brings star power to the event — even if some critics see it as a last-minute push to drive interest.
With WrestleMania approaching and big names continuing to be announced, the debate over pricing, promotion, and fan value isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon.
