Just one day before Saturday Night’s Main Event, John Cena set the record straight once and for all: his retirement match against GUNTHER will go on last, despite widespread rumors claiming otherwise.
Cena addressed the situation during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on December 12, 2025, making it crystal clear that he’s closing the show — and calling out those who ran with the wrong narrative in the first place.
“I was on Jimmy Kimmel and I said I was ending the show. I said I normally go to bed early, but I’m going to have to go to bed late for this one. People didn’t read the tea leaves. We’re last. Yes, my match is going last.”
Earlier this week, reports from Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline claimed Cena vs. GUNTHER would open the event, noting there were no time constraints since it was airing exclusively on Peacock. Alvarez even added that Cena would be allowed to take “as much time as he wants.”
That version of the lineup was later disputed by Andrew Baydala on December 11, who said Cena’s farewell would not open the show. But now, Cena himself has confirmed the real plan — and he’s not too pleased with how the false story spread.
“I don’t know how the rumors started. I think some folks with credibility like to kick a hornet’s nest every once in a while to get people talking.”
Cena also took a shot at how today’s media landscape encourages viral misinformation over accuracy, even when the facts are already out in the open.
“We’re in the age of information, so it’s going to keep my attention. ‘You’re not last!’ Sure, that’s going to keep my attention for a few hot clicks. I don’t know how it even started.”
Despite the noise, Cena remained humble about his place on the card, noting that he would’ve happily opened the show if asked — but confirmed that, as of now, he’s officially the main event.
“Gosh, if they want me to go on first, that’s what I will do — but we are LAST at this point.”
The rest of the Saturday Night’s Main Event card includes WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi in a non-title match, Bayley vs. Sol Ruca, and AJ Styles & Dragon Lee taking on Je’Von Evans & Leon Slater in tag team action. But all roads lead to Cena’s farewell — now officially confirmed to close the show in what’s expected to be an emotional and historic moment.
