John Cena will be retiring in less than a month and as the world awaits his retirement, CM Punk has now compared Cena to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

While speaking on Up & Adams, CM Punk shared his thoughts on John Cena’s upcoming retirement, comparing him to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

Punk explained that Cena has “held it down” for WWE over many years and is now stepping away with class and dignity. He said it has been special to watch Cena close out his career in real time, since fans rarely get the chance to appreciate iconic athletes as they say farewell.

“Cena is, you know, I think our Wayne Gretzky — I’ve been saying — somebody who’s just kind of held it down for a very, very long time. And for him to wrap it up, I think is like watching him exit with such style and grace and dignity. It’s been a real treat. You know, we don’t often get to say goodbye in real time to our sports heroes, so this is one time we can.”

The Second City Saint pointed out how uncertain physical careers can be, comparing wrestling to the NFL. Punk mentioned that a career can end instantly due to injury, so seeing Cena leave on his own terms while still healthy is something rare and admirable.

“Oh, 100%. Yeah. Especially with how physical this is — how physical NFL is. Everything, every game, every match is fleeting. It could end like that. So, you know, he’s leaving with his health.”

It’s to be noted that Wayne Gretzky is widely considered the greatest player in NHL history, known for his long-lasting dominance, leadership and influence over the sport. So it’s clear that CM Punk feels Cena has played a similar role in WWE.

John Cena’s final match will take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC and it’s expected to be one of the most highly anticipated matches in the history of WWE. Therefore, we’ll have to see how Cena’s final match turns out in the end.

Do you agree with CM Punk? Is John Cena wrestling’s Wayne Gretzky — or is there someone else who fits that comparison better? Sound off in the comments.
