John Cena just pulled back the curtain on one of the most controversial moments of his retirement run — and it turns out, there wasn’t a grand plan after all.
Appearing on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Cena got brutally honest when Cody asked about two specific facial expressions from his final year: the cold moment he kicked Cody in the groin at Elimination Chamber, and the peaceful smile as he passed out in Gunther’s sleeper hold during his final match.
The kicker? Cena admitted that the heel turn was never part of a long-term story — WWE simply wanted a viral shock.
“In February, they just wanted to make a moment,” Cena said bluntly. “I get it. The business is about making moments. There’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t always have to have a nine-month trajectory.”
While fans speculated that Cena’s low blow at Elimination Chamber was the start of a dark twist in his farewell tour, Cena now reveals it was a creative decision made purely for impact.
“You can understand that like, yo — we’ve got a ton of eyes on tonight. Let’s do something impactful. And then you, as artists, can run through the maze and figure it out.”
That last-minute pivot didn’t bother Cena. In fact, he embraced it — but had one key request.
“I’ll do whatever the f* you guys want,”* he told WWE’s team. “Just stay on the face longer than you think. It’s gonna feel weird. Just stay.”
According to Cena, the idea was to let the crowd read everything they needed to know just from his face. No long explanation. Just one look. One turn.
“That was easy,” he added, explaining how the shift in demeanor came naturally. “Certainly I’ll work backwards. Well, f*, I’ll try to lean into it.”*
“The whole fifteen months — I’m announcing my retirement, we have a year left… Eighteen months is literally a chronicle of the cycle of life. Like an individual toward the end of their life announcing: ‘Hey, I’m gonna go.’”
Cena’s heel turn sparked months of speculation and rewrites of fan theories about his legacy. But now we know — it wasn’t some deep-layered twist. It was WWE doing what it does best: chasing the moment. Was the payoff worth it? That’s up for debate.
