John Cena dropped a line that longtime wrestling fans won’t forget anytime soon while speaking at MEGACON Orlando, offering rare public praise for one of his most famous rivals, CM Punk.

During the fan Q&A session, Cena was asked about which people inspire him across both wrestling and acting. Instead of pointing to just one figure, Cena explained that he respects anyone who treats their craft as a true calling rather than just a job. That answer led him to reflect on the concept of vocation and how certain performers push each other to improve.

Cena took time to explain how he views his career, noting that wrestling and acting both became something deeper than simple employment. He emphasized that inspiration comes from people who stay committed to their craft and continue evolving.

“So that’s a great question. I’m inspired by anybody on either side, whether on the canvas or on screen, who has made it. I use the word vocation a lot because vocation to me is a level up from the job. I have a job to do what I do so I can use the resources that I get from the job to do the stuff I really want to do.”

He continued by explaining how wrestling became more than just work, describing it as a calling that shaped his life and perspective.

“Vocation to me is different. Vocation is like the saying, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. Wrestling is a vocation. I can’t believe I’ve been able to call it my vocation. Cinema now, TV now is a vocation. I can’t believe I can call that my vocation.”

As Cena elaborated, he mentioned several respected names, including major figures he’s worked alongside in WWE and beyond. That’s when he turned the conversation toward the idea of competition and how creative friction between performers can elevate everyone involved.

“So I’m inspired by anyone who has made it. And when I say made it, I don’t mean finished the journey. I believe that there is no finish line. Those are the folks who like, ‘Well, this is what I do.’ Robert’s one of those. Triple H would be one of those. But there’s so many people out there because I don’t want to marry myself to one ideology.”

He then addressed how different wrestling styles and philosophies can lead to growth — before delivering the quote that immediately caught fans’ attention.

“There’s a lot of great wrestlers that don’t think about the business the same way I do, and I’m inspired by them because we challenge each other.”

“CM Punk, my wrestling soulmate. We share a lot of common ground, but I think we bring the best out of each other because we like to challenge each other.”

Cena wrapped up his answer by making it clear that he doesn’t believe inspiration comes from just one individual, but from many people who remain committed to what they love.

“So I’m inspired by people who have made it — people who say, ‘This is what I do and this is what I love to do.’ I couldn’t pick one individual because I want to keep my mind open and curious. I hope that helps.”

Cena and CM Punk built one of WWE’s defining rivalries of the modern era, including their legendary 2011 program that helped reshape the company’s direction at the time. Hearing Cena refer to Punk as his “wrestling soulmate” speaks to the mutual respect that has existed beneath their on-screen battles for years.

Even now, with both men firmly established as all-time greats, moments like this show how their connection inside the ring helped shape each other’s careers and left a lasting mark on the industry.
