WrestleMania 41 shocked fans when TNA World Champion Joe Hendry was revealed as Randy Orton’s surprise opponent, and Orton quickly defeated him and now Hendry has revealed when he first found out he would be competing at WrestleMania 41 and how it came together.
While speaking to Ariel Helwani, Joe Hendry revealed that he found out about his appearance at WrestleMania 41 a week before the event, and he had to keep the news to himself for that entire week.
Hendry explained that he was at the airport when he received a text from Triple H asking if he could talk. At the time, he was at WWE World and expected the message to be about something like the Slammys or a promo at WWE World. However, Triple H surprised him by mentioning that Randy needed an opponent.
Hendry admitted that this threw him off completely, leaving him in a state of shock. Despite the shock, he knew there was work to be done, and he was determined to bring as much value as possible to the moment. Hendry explained how proud he was of what they achieved together.
“I found out about a week before. I had to sit on this for a week. So I was in the airport and I got a text from Triple H saying, ‘Can you talk?’ I was at WWE World and scheduled to be there, and I thought maybe it was something related to the Slammys or a promo at WWE World—that’s what I expected the call to be about. But Triple H was like, ‘Listen, I’m sure you know Randy needs an opponent.’ And yeah, that threw me off completely. I was in a state of shock. I knew there was a job to be done, and I knew in my mind, but when I approach these things, I want to bring as much value as possible and make it the best moment. And I am so proud of what we did there.”
This follows Triple H’s confirmation that Joe Hendry will be making appearances at future WrestleMania events. Despite losing quickly to Randy Orton at WrestleMania, Hendry’s appearance significantly raised his profile. Now that he is back in NXT, we’ll have to see how Hendry will be booked on NXT television once again.
