John Cena wrestled his final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Greatest of All Time tapped out in his final performance, which shocked the pro wrestling world. Fans were outraged and viral hatred spread aimed at Triple H. A lot of people have weighed in on things, and now Jim Ross is putting his opinion out there.
Jim Ross has addressed the finish to John Cena’s retirement match, saying the decision for Cena to tap out to GUNTHER made sense. Speaking on Grilling JR, the WWE Hall of Famer explained that Cena’s career and standing were already established, and the result of the match was not going to change that.
“I thought it was the right call. You know, John Cena is legacy, and his the feel of John Cena his career, the whole nine yards, it just winning or losing was not going to affect that. He was already a made man. Tony Soprano did not need to shoot one more person to be a badass. He’d already killed plenty, and he was the guy.”
Ross also reflected on being involved in Cena’s signing with WWE, recalling a conversation with Vince McMahon shortly after he brought Cena into the company. He said he returned to Stamford and told McMahon he had signed someone he believed would headline WrestleMania, a claim that was initially met with doubt.
“I flew back on a red eye and landed, and went straight to the office. And this was there, and I told him, I said, I just signed a guy that’ll be for headline WrestleMania. And Vince thought I was crazy. He said, You’re just sleep-deprived or some sh*t.”
When discussing GUNTHER, Ross said the win over Cena reinforced his position on the roster and explained why he would prioritize him in any hypothetical draft scenario.
“I guarantee one thing, of all of everybody on the WWE roster… if I had a territory, and I just won the lottery, and I’m going to start my own territory, and I got to do a draft, I promise your ass GUNTHER will be at the very near, the very top echelon… of the draft,” Ross stated. “He’s got character. He’s got integrity. He takes care of himself. He looks good.”
Jim Ross meant a lot to John Cena’s career in WWE. This is why his name was mentioned during the broadcast of Cena’s last match, which was a surprise considering the fact that he’s been with AEW for years.
We will have to see what is next for John Cena. His Hollywood career will certainly continue, but his career in the ring is now over as we saw him wrestle for the final time.
