CM Punk apologized for his tweet against Saudi Arabia during the Night of Champions kickoff show, but many people felt his apology was not sincere at all. There’s still a lot of controversy surrounding Punk’s apology and now Jim Ross has come to Punk’s defense.

While speaking on Grilling JR, Conrad Thompson asked Jim Ross what he thought about the so-called controversy of CM Punk being in Saudi Arabia. Ross said people were making too much of it. He said Punk’s heart was in the right place and pointed out that Punk is always controversial, which is part of what makes him interesting to follow.

Ross also mentioned that Punk is a good friend of his and that he fully supports his work. He admitted he still wishes Punk was in AEW because he brings so much to any show he’s part of. Overall, Ross thought people were just overthinking the situation. To him, wrestling is supposed to be fun and entertaining, and that’s how he’s always looked at it.

“It’s overthought. Overthought. And you know, I know that Punk’s heart is in the right place. He’s controversial, that’s why he’s so fun to follow. Phil’s a good friend of mine. I am a full-on supporter of his work, yes. I really am. I still wish he was at AEW, quite frankly. He adds a lot to any presentation that he’s involved in. So I think we’re overthinking it a little bit, quite honestly, and it kind of gets a little bit— I don’t know— gets a little bit overthought, as I said. Just take it easy. It’s supposed to be wrestling. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be entertaining. That’s what I’ve always thought.”

This comes after Dave Meltzer recently claimed that WWE planted the fan that CM Punk apologized to. That’s not all as even Ryback made it clear CM Punk is not a sellout for competing in Saudi Arabia. Regardless, it’s clear the whole situation is overblown and many fans will agree with what Jim Ross had to say.
