Jerry “The King” Lawler hasn’t ruled out one more match—but longtime friend and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Ross doesn’t think it’s happening.
Speaking on Grilling JR, Jim Ross talked about Lawler’s health after spending time with him over the weekend at a wrestling event in Pittsburgh. While Lawler recently told News 5 Memphis that he hasn’t completely shut the door on stepping into the ring again, Ross made it clear he has serious reservations because of Lawler’s current health issues.
“Well, after being around him all weekend and loving him like I do, I hope not,” Ross said when asked about Lawler’s potential return. “I don’t see how he can do it. He’s like me—he doesn’t get around very quickly, his balance is a little suspect.”
Ross was empathetic about Lawler’s passion for the business, noting how deeply ingrained wrestling is in Lawler’s life after more than 50 years in the industry. Even then, he really doesn’t see Lawler having a match again.
“He loves the business so much. It’s his whole life. After more than 50 years, he has a hard time separating himself from it. If he wants to have another match and he’s able to have another match, I’d support it. But honestly, I really don’t see it happening.”
This comes after Lawler stated that he hasn’t ruled out “one more match,” despite still recovering from a serious stroke suffered in September. While his strength is slowly returning and he’s traveling for fan signings, his painting hobby has been put on hold due to colorblindness caused by the stroke.
“The King’s not quite back in the ring… but I’ve not put it out of my mind. One more match… in there… somewhere.”
On top of that, Fightful Select reported that there is “zero percent chance” WWE would clear Lawler for an in-ring return—meaning if it happens, it would have to be in an independent promotion.
Jim Ross has the thoughts of many fans—grateful for Lawler’s legacy and hopeful for his health. While the idea of one last match may be tempting for The King, those who know him best are prioritizing his well-being over nostalgia.
