WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross may be known for his grit behind the mic, but even the toughest voices in wrestling eventually feel the wear and tear.

While speaking on Grilling JR just before undergoing surgery for colon cancer, the legendary announcer opened up about his health—and revealed he’s seriously considering slowing down after years on the grind.

Ross didn’t mince words when reflecting on the toll recent surgeries have taken on him. In a quiet, honest moment, he admitted:

“These surgeries are adding up and I’m getting ready to throw in the white flag uh uh with it. But nonetheless, uh it’s uh going to be all right.”

He compared his body to something fans could relate to—an old car that’s been driven hard for far too long.

“I’m learning a lot about things. I’m learning a lot about my body and about what it has. And it’s like an old car. I think I’m… it’s like an old car, Connie. I’m trying to still drive it and run it and and that’s maybe one of my issues—the old car has run too long, too hard.”

Though Ross has made it clear he still loves being part of the business, he’s starting to accept that it might be time to take a step back. He said slowing down is now a real option on the table.

“So I was thinking I really slowed down after the surgery, talked to the doctor, Chis, I—I’ll try to really slow down when this is over and, uh, you know, make some make a few autograph appearances, which I love to do and, uh, see what—what Tony Khan’s got, pardon me, ready for me for AEW.”

He still wants to contribute, but acknowledges his full-time days may be numbered—even if he believes he can still hang with the best.

“I could still do my schedule I had but I don’t know if anybody else believes that. Uh I believe it.”

Whether or not AEW President Tony Khan puts him back behind the desk for pay-per-views remains to be seen.

“So, you know, I still would love to do the pay-per-views on AEW, but I don’t know if Tony will want me on. I don’t know.”

Ross’ comments mark a shift in tone—less about the grind, and more about sustainability. It’s a sign that even legends know when to pace themselves, especially when health is on the line.

Jim Ross’ surgery was a success, and now, all eyes are on his recovery and what the future holds. For longtime fans, hearing him reflect this way is both sobering and deeply personal.
