JBL Reacts to Chris Jericho WWE Return Rumors Amid Raw Mystery Box Angle

Could Chris Jericho be headed back to WWE? That’s the question swirling around the mystery “Do Not Open” box angle on WWE Raw ahead of Elimination Chamber in Chicago — and JBL just weighed in.

During a recent appearance on TMZ’s Inside The Ring, the WWE Hall of Famer was asked directly about the speculation that Jericho could be behind the storyline twist. While JBL made it clear he doesn’t have inside information, he didn’t dismiss the possibility either. Instead, he took fans back to the early 1990s — long before Jericho became a global star.

“I don’t know. Oh, I’ve heard so many rumors about Chris and I remember I was in the early 90s. We were — I was working for Tenryu Genichiro over in Japan for WAR, and he was there. Chris had got a job working as one of the, at the time, the light heavyweights. I remember seeing him and thinking if that guy lives he’s going to be awesome. I mean, they were doing — talk about these guys today — they were doing DDTs off the apron to the floor. They’re doing — I mean, it was crazy what they were doing back then.”

Layfield made it clear that Jericho’s talent was obvious even back then — and what’s impressed him most is how Jericho has stayed relevant for decades.

“And I remember how talented I thought he was then. And, you know, he’s just been fantastic and he keeps finding ways to reinvent himself.”

When pressed about whether Jericho could actually return to WWE amid the Elimination Chamber storyline, JBL didn’t claim any knowledge — but he made his feelings known.

“And I don’t know if Chris is coming or not. I hope he is. I think it’d be great if he is.”

Jericho has built a career on surprise moments and reinvention, from WCW cruiserweight standout to WWE Undisputed Champion to his current run outside the company. With WWE leaning into mystery angles again, the timing of the speculation has only fueled fan theories.

JBL didn’t confirm anything, but he made one thing clear — if Chris Jericho walks back through a WWE curtain, he believes it would be a major moment.
