Jamie Hayter’s explosive return at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door brought London’s O2 Arena to its feet—but now we’re learning it nearly didn’t happen when it did.

According to Fightful Select, Hayter’s comeback came “a little later than AEW had hoped,” due to a hidden injury she suffered during the closing moments of her AEW Double or Nothing match against Mercedes Moné. At the time, Hayter appeared fine and even told reporters she was okay. But backstage, it became clear she wasn’t.

She was later pulled from in-ring action and “wasn’t cleared for further contact.” AEW accelerated Thekla’s debut to fill the void. As it turns out, there weren’t even solid plans in place for Thekla to show up until Hayter’s injury forced AEW’s hand.

Despite being sidelined, Hayter played a crucial role in getting Thekla over. “Hayter gained praise for working through a smoke and mirrors spot while not cleared,” helping launch the newcomer’s AEW run behind the scenes. The long-term plan was always for Hayter and Thekla to feud—and now, with Hayter cleared and back, that storyline is finally ready to kick off.

Jamie Hayter’s last match before Forbidden Door took place on May 25 at Double or Nothing. Her return at Forbidden Door saw her storm the ring mid-brawl to a thunderous ovation from the UK crowd.

Now that she’s back, the focus shifts to what’s next—especially with unfinished business between her and Thekla.
